Celebrating ‘Bricklayer Day’

Last Wednesday it was
Dia de los Albañiles (Day of the construction workers) in Mexico. Officially known as Dia de la Santa Cruz, Day of the Holy Cross. On this day, construction workers attend mass and bless a cross, followed by placing the cross on the highest level of the construction site. It’s a ritual to prevent bad things from happening to the construction site and its workers. It is also the day to honour their work. In the future, there might be disasters that will damage houses and other buildings, but there will always be construction workers to help rebuild. It is definitely hard work. They are exposed to the full sun all day, and are working with their hands hardly using electrical equipment.
In Mexico, there cannot be a special day without a celebration. So, as custom requires, the owners of the property (in this case: us) give the workers the afternoon off and make sure there is enough food, beer, mezcal and music for everyone.
So we threw a party on our terrain! Around 40 construction workers came to our site from 5 different working spots. We had a great soup and barbecue prepared by Doña Irma. And of course we hiked up and down to the supermarket to get cold drinks.
We are really pleased we could offer our terrain as ‘the place to be’ for Dia de los Albañiles. 40 construction workers means a lot of blessings. Hotel con Corazón Mexico has a bright future ahead of itself!
